Microbial Activity and Diversity
Soil microbial content and activity are among key factors shaping plant productivity, and there are many mechanisms in which soil microbial composition may positively impact plant production. Conceivably, key among those mechanisms are:
- Enhancements in soil fertility (i.e., by means of nutrient release from fertilizer materials, or enhanced soil organic matter formation).
- Improved plant pathogen resistance, among others.
Studies involving beneficial microbial consortia show a great contribution in those mechanisms and offer further and deeper insights as to how beneficial microbial consortia improve plant production. Consult further sections for a selection of the most notable studies and further discussion.
